Ted wrote this blues study as a tribute to Wes Montgomery. He later wrote two variations (#2 in G and #3 in Eb). All three have the same type of blues progression.
Notice the optional F# bass note on the second chord in measure 1. Ted indicated that playing this note instead of the F would transform the chord to a F#m6/9 chord if you wanted that sound. He also provides an optional Bbmaj9 chord in measure 7.
Ted didn’t write any chords for the turnaround (measures 11 and 12) other than the Bb13 no 9 (the I chord), so I added a common VI7 – ii – V7. Go ahead and add your own turnaround variations.
As with “Walkin’ With Wes #2” and “#3”, first learn the changes, sustaining the chords. Then when you feel comfortable with it try adding other rhythmic punches and give it a bass line…a walkin’ bass line…of course!
At the top of the page he wrote, “Chordal Skeleton” meaning that the exact voicings are the basic changes, but you should feel free to make variations. Experiment and have fun with this blues study.
Enjoy!
