This song was written by Burt Bacharach (lyrics later added by Hal David), and was recorded by Dusty Springfield for the 1967 film Casino Royale.  It has been recorded by many artists, and unfortunately it has become synonymous with “lounge” and “easy-listening” music.

Ted’s arrangement is for intermediate level solo guitar and is to be played, as he wrote, “out of time.”  It’s somewhat of an outline arrangement that needs lots of fills, as he indicated, “Use Rt. hand arpeg. [arpeggio] fills in places where you deem it necessary.”

There are two places where Ted changed the melody slightly, indicated in my compilation pages (both on page 1) as “melodic variation” with a red arrow.  Compare the difference with the notation of the lead sheet.

Another spot where Ted offers a melodic variation is on the Gm7 chord in the second line of page 1 (of the compilation).  Instead of playing the D note that is marked with the box symbol, he wrote, “or use [box] on high G note” to indicate a G note for “dis” of the word “disguise.”

For the A11 in the second line, page 1, you may want to play the A bass note on the open 5th string, rather than the fretted 6th string.  For the following A7(b9) chord Ted wrote: “a fill chord” and “Try a ‘roll’ or arpeg. here.”

On the A11 chord at the top of page 2, Ted wrote: “Twice on the G.”  A few other chords he also wrote “Twice” to indicate playing a note more than is written with his “X” mark.  (If you simply follow the notation, you can’t go wrong.)

Also at the top of page 2, you can see how he added the G11 to G9 fill phrase to echo the A11 to A9 phrase in the previous measure.

Although Ted’s arrangement doesn’t include the final tag at the end, I’ve added this section from the chart so you can make your own ending.  For the 2nd ending, you may wish to use the same A7(b9#5) chord from the first ending.

Enjoy!
